Cumbrian producers set to benefit from new store

Around 40 Cumbrian producers of goods ranging from foods and drinks like jams and cheese to local beers are to be boosted by a new store in Penrith.

Northern retailer Booths is to open its new store in Penrith in November.  The family-run business, which operates 26 stores throughout the region, including four others in Cumbria, currently stocks items from 41 producers throughout the county and a significant number of these will also be available at the company’s exciting new store in Penrith.

Richard Sykes, manager of the forthcoming Booths Penrith store, said: "Booths’ commitment to local producers is right at the heart of the company’s ethos and is something we are very proud of. We source as many items as possible from the counties in which we operate and Cumbria is a prime example of that.

"Our new Penrith store will provide another opportunity for people in the town, and the rest of Eden, to buy local and help us to support our fantastic suppliers in the county as well as giving people access to the best produce from neighbouring counties Lancashire and Yorkshire.”

Booths’ range of local products includes flour from the Watermill in Little Salkeld, cakes from the Appleby Bakery, cheeses from the Appleby Creamery and Beeswax candles from Jenny’s Bees in Orton.

Maurice Walton, director of Appleby Creamery, which supplies to Booths five existing stores in Cumbria, said: "We started by supplying Booths’ Artisan store in Kendal around three years ago and from there we have moved to supplying cheese into the other Booths stores in Cumbria.

"Our relationship with Booths has allowed us to take the next step with growing our business and the new store in Penrith will be another good opportunity for us to sell our cheese and we are looking forward to continuing working with Booths.”

The Penrith store will include an exciting new café design and layout – the first of its kind in Booths stores. The café will place an emphasis on selling fresh produce produced that day in the store.
